SWAT Deputy Criticised After Being Caught Using Dating App During Armed Standoff

A California sheriff’s deputy is facing backlash after being caught on camera apparently using a dating app during a high-risk SWAT operation involving an armed suspect.

The incident took place on April 8 in Jurupa Valley, where deputies had been pursuing a suspect before the situation escalated into a tense standoff near a high school. The suspect crashed his vehicle and refused to surrender, leading to an hours-long operation involving SWAT teams.

During the standoff, aerial footage captured a deputy positioned behind an armored vehicle, seemingly scrolling through profiles on a dating app.

The video showed the officer swiping through what appeared to be profiles, even as the suspect remained armed just a short distance away. The clip quickly spread online, sparking criticism over the deputy’s behavior during such a serious situation.

Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco did not hold back in his response after the footage went viral. He said he was “shocked,” “embarrassed,” and “angry” upon seeing the video.

The sheriff described the deputy’s actions as a “slap in the face” to other officers involved in the operation, emphasizing that the behavior fell far below the standards expected during critical incidents.

The department confirmed that the deputy has been identified and that an internal investigation has been launched. Officials said appropriate action will be taken based on the findings.

Despite the distraction caught on camera, authorities stressed that the situation remained dangerous throughout.

SWAT teams used various tactics, including deploying tear gas and robotic tools, in an effort to bring the standoff to a safe conclusion.

However, the situation ended tragically when the suspect was later found dead with injuries consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Authorities have not released the suspect’s identity.

The sheriff’s office reiterated that the deputy’s actions do not reflect the department’s standards or expectations. The internal investigation is ongoing, and further updates are expected once it concludes.
