Man Tries to Rob 6 Banks in 5 Days but Walks Away With Just $605, Police Say

A man accused of robbing multiple banks across New York City ended up with far less money than expected, with police saying his total haul from six attempts was only $605.

According to authorities, 33-year-old Gustavo DeJesus Torres is wanted after allegedly targeting several Chase Bank branches across different parts of New York City over a five-day period.

Police said the incidents happened between March 13 and March 17, when Torres entered six separate bank locations in Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and the Bronx.

Investigators said he handed tellers handwritten notes demanding cash and warning that people could get hurt if they did not cooperate. However, police said he did not claim to have a weapon.

Out of the six attempts, he managed to get money only three times.

Authorities said he took $320 from a branch in Jackson Heights, Queens, and $265 from another branch in Flatbush, Brooklyn. In another attempt at a bank in Harlem, he left with just $20.

During the other three incidents, police said he fled without getting any money.

Security footage released by police shows the suspect traveling between locations, including one image of him standing on a subway platform holding a coffee cup while moving between banks.

Officials said he usually left the scene on foot after each attempt.

Police described him as a balding man with a beard, sometimes wearing a mask during the robberies.

Authorities said the suspect may have been involved in similar crimes before.

In 2021, a man with the same name was arrested in New Jersey after robbing a bank using a note that claimed he was armed. In that case, police said the robber got away with about $6,000.

Police also said Torres was arrested last month in connection with another bank robbery in the TriBeCa area of Manhattan, where about $600 was taken.

The investigation into the recent robbery attempts is ongoing.
