A family in Missouri got a shocking surprise after discovering a stranger in their kitchen eating cereal and petting their dog.
According to court documents, 23-year-old Teara Joann Smith was arrested on March 3 in Springfield after allegedly entering a home without permission and making herself comfortable inside.
Police were called after a woman reported that her son had gone into the kitchen after smelling something burning in the house.

When he walked in, he found an unfamiliar woman sitting there eating Fruity Pebbles cereal while petting the family’s dog. He went back outside and told his mother there was “a strange lady in the kitchen eating cereal,” according to the report.
The woman then went inside to check for herself and found the same scene. Milk and cereal had been spilled on the floor, and the oven was on, creating a burnt smell in the house.
Officers arrived at the home and found Smith still in the kitchen.
Police said she was not wearing pants, shoes, or socks and had a jacket wrapped around her waist. According to the report, she appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance and was smiling and giggling while speaking to officers.

Authorities also said it took several minutes for her to tell them her name, and she allegedly made statements using nonsensical or made-up words during the interaction.
The following day, police spoke with Smith again while she was in jail.
According to the probable cause statement, she said she had been walking around when she saw the house and believed it was a “fair.” She said she knocked on the door and rang the bell, and after hearing something inside, she walked into the residence.
Smith told officers that she was hungry, so she decided to eat cereal. She also denied turning on the stove, saying it was already on when she arrived. Police said she admitted to smoking marijuana before the incident.
Smith was charged with first-degree burglary and has pleaded not guilty.
Records also show she had previous arrests, including one in November 2025 for tampering with a motor vehicle and driving with a suspended or revoked license, as well as another arrest in late 2024, though details of that case were unclear.
Authorities said it was not known whether she had hired an attorney at the time of the report.
What started as a normal morning for the family quickly turned into a bizarre situation — one that ended with police finding a stranger eating cereal in their kitchen and petting their dog.
